Southern Mexico, Central America, and northwestern South America are home to the species. The smooth helmeted iguana is named for the prominent casque, or crest on the back of its head and neck which has the appearance of a helmet.The smooth-headed iguana is a medium-sized reptile with long, slender legs and extremely long toes. With irregular spots, it can be grey, olive, brown, black, or reddish-brown. As a form of camouflage, the smooth helmeted iguana may change the color of its skin. The smooth helmeted iguana, as the name suggests, has a large crest on its head that tapers to a saw-tooth ridge along its back. The crest is present in both men and females of the species, with males having a bigger crest.When grown, C. cristatus has a snout-to-vent length (SVL) of 9-12 cm (4-5 in). It is a non-heliotherm species, which means it does not use the sun to warm its body. Rather, it keeps its body temperature about 26 °C (79 °F), which is close to the temperature of its forest floor environment.
