The Romanians were reduced to 10 men afterwards, with the red card clearly having no bearing on the game. Switzerland lost 2-0 in their last game of the group stage to the South Americans, but that did not stop them from advancing to the last-16 as the group’s runner-ups behind Romania. The A-Team met Spain in the round-of-16, and La Roja proved too much for them to handle. Hodgson’s side lost 3-0 to the Spaniards and were eliminated, with two late second-half goals dealing a blow on their chances of a comeback from Fernando Hierro’s 15th-minute opener. Switzerland have appeared in four World Cups afterwards and will also be playing in Qatar 2022. However, they have not progressed past the last-16 in the last seven World Cups they have played, with the quarter-finals berths in 1934, 1938, and 1954 still their best-placed finishes in the competition.
