Cornflower is a captivating, tall annual characterized by a highly branched stem and hairy, grey-green leaves. Its most notable feature is the large, intensely blue “flowers,” which, like other members of the daisy family (Asteraceae), actually form a compound head comprising numerous small flowers. The outer edge of the head displays prominent clear blue flowers, while the central region features smaller purplish ones. The flowering period spans from June to August, succeeded by seeds comparable in size to cereal grains but adorned with a tuft of short bristles.
